Heybeliada (historically Chalki, deriving from the ancient Greek word for copper, reflecting Byzantine copper mines on its southwestern shore) presents an atmosphere distinctly more contemplative and scholarly than its bustling neighbor Büyükada. The arrival harbor is anchored by the disciplined masonry facades of the Naval Cadet School, while the interior of the island rises into tranquil hills cloaked in Mediterranean stone pine (Pinus pinea).
Because tour groups heavily concentrate on Büyükada, Heybeliada maintains an unhurried cadence. Writers, academics, and long-term summer residents stroll along shaded residential streets lined with wooden villas, bougainvillea, and climbing jasmine. The island is also home to celebrated culinary fixtures such as Heyamola Ada Lokantası, where traditional Aegean meze, house-cured lakerda (bonito), grilled octopus, and seasonal seafood are served directly overlooking the fishing harbor.

Halki Theological School (Aya Triada)
Positioned on the summit of Ümit Tepesi (Hill of Hope). Built upon the foundations of a ninth-century monastery founded by Byzantine Patriarch Saint Photius I. Features a historic library housing rare theological incunabula, neoclassical halls, manicured monastic gardens, and a Byzantine chapel. Quiet visitors dressed respectfully (covered shoulders and knees) are welcomed into the gardens Monday through Saturday (09:00–15:30).

Located at Refah Şehitleri Caddesi No: 67. The historic timber summer villa of General İsmet İnönü, hero of the Turkish War of Independence and Turkey's second President. Hosted Mustafa Kemal Atatürk during strategic Republican summits in the 1930s. Maintained by the İnönü Foundation with original furnishings, diplomatic letters, and photographs.

A culinary stop on Heybeliada should include a visit to Tarihi Roma Dondurmacısı, positioned directly opposite the naval high school gate, followed by a visit to neighborhood bakeries along Ayyıldız Caddesi for hot almond shortbread (un kurabiyesi) and morning cheese-filled pastries. For dinner, make reservations at Heyamola Ada Lokantası (Ayyıldız Caddesi No: 25/A) to savor seasonal wild greens, stuffed zucchini blossoms, and freshly grilled Marmara fish.
Internal Island Transit: Heybeliada's municipal electric shuttle route HA-1 runs a circular loop from the ferry terminal around Çam Limanı bay, charging 143.95 TL per boarding via standard Istanbulkart. On-demand Ada Taksi electric shuttles can also be booked for direct trips up Ümit Tepesi to the seminary entrance.
Pine Hiking Trails & Cultural Observances
Unlike Büyükada, which features substantial residential density, Heybeliada's topography is dominated by protected state forest lands. The premier walking circuit begins at the ferry docks, skirts the walls of the Naval High School, ascends toward Ümit Tepesi through stone pine woods, and descends southwest toward Çam Limanı. Along the unpaved trail paths, yellow-legged gulls roost in sea cliffs and local tortoises are frequently spotted crossing pine needle duff.
Every year on August 15, Heybeliada's historic Greek community and visiting pilgrims gather for the major liturgical feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos (Panagia Feast / Meryem Ana Yortusu). Morning liturgies inside the Panagia Church are followed by traditional blessed bread distributions and quiet celebratory meals across waterfront taverns. Travelers visiting during this period will experience centuries-old island communal traditions intact.
